The qualitative analysis system: Updating the IRI

James F. Christie · Literacy Research and Instruction · 1979

Presents the Qualitative Analysis System (QAS), a system of qualitative error analysis designed to be used in conjunction with the Informal Reading Inventory. The system involves analyzing oral reading errors in terms of three variables: (a) graphic similarity with text item, (b) acceptability in context, and (c) self‐correction. The QAS yields information about the prediction and correction reading strategies. Basic guidelines for using the system are presented, and several examples are used to illustrate how QAS results can be used to prescribe reading strategy lessons.
