The creation of an information highway for intermodal transport
Karel Vanroye, Wim A.G. Blonk · Maritime Policy & Management · 1998
Although the use of information and communication technology applications is important for the enhancement of the quality of transport services and the efficiency of operations, their utilization in transport still remains limited. In order to stimulate the creation of an information highway for intermodal transport logistics, the European Commission has initiated the MARTRANS project. Its initial goals were to set up a logistics information network for real-time information on cargo and vessels by interconnecting existing EDI-Port Community Systems and implementing new EDI systems in nonautomated ports. However, the focus of the project has shifted away from maritime transport, and its course is now set on intermodalism.
