A Note on Monitoring the Stability of Triangular Decomposition of Sparse Matrices

A method is proposed for bounding the numerical instability in Gaussian elimination. The computational cost of obtaining the bound contributes little to the cost of the elimination. The bound is a slight improvement on that given by Erisman and Reid.
