In this paper, we investigate the problem of designing secure and trustworthy systems based on the notion of attack space. In particular, we consider the study of structural properties of a system at a design or architectural level. This preliminary work is inspired by the structure theory of machines and is stimulated by the emerging needs for designing secure and trustworthy systems. We believe that the study of structural properties of machines can provide an interesting approach to understanding the design problems of trustworthy systems. To illustrate the idea, we use an example of the simple machine structure which has specific structural properties. Finally we provide several research problems.
