Abstract The adaptive array antenna is an effective means of improving frequency efficiency in cellular mobile communication systems. In these systems, the frequency efficiency is generally improved by improving the CIR characteristic. This paper considers W‐CDMA systems from such a viewpoint, assuming that an adaptive array antenna is used in the wireless base station. The relation between the array antenna structure (the number and directivity of antenna elements) and the frequency efficiency is analyzed by examining the improvement of the CIR characteristic in a cellular environment containing multiple cells. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
