The State of Data Communication Networks in Africa

Buhle Mbambo · Resource Sharing & Information Networks · 1998

Networks currently exist in many African countries. This paper lists these networks in two categories-those with African origins and those supported by external funding. Most networks use Fidonet technology thai is appropriate to the poor telephone lines, but other forms of communication are used like satellite and wireless. Given more basic needs, telecommunications is often a low priority for African governments. Imported equipment is very expensive. Governments must find a way to sustain existing networks of all types, even if foreign funding disappears. Africa has a chance to “leap frog” in technological developments by adapting the new technologies to its needs.
