The use and implementation of interval data types in Fortran are examined. In particular, the innovations introduced in the intrinsic support for intervals in Forte TM Developer 6 Fortran 95 from Sun Microsystems Inc. are described and justified. Implications for future extensions to the Fortran language are also described.
