Optimum resource allocation schemes for packet-based cellular communications systems

David A. J. Pearce · Electronics Letters · 2003

The problem of optimising the capacity of cellular networks for packet-switched data where automatic repeat request schemes are available, and in particular the problem of determining the optimum number of radio channels to assign to each packet, is considered. The metric considered is the packet delay, and system performance is evaluated using simulation. It is shown that the optimum number of channels to assign to a packet is a function of the offered traffic, and a simple method is proposed to allow the base stations to dynamically estimate this optimum number.
