Extremum principles for constraint problems in electrostatics†

The theory of complementary variational principles for a mixed boundary value problem with a constraint is applied to electrostatic fields where the constraint corresponds to the specification of the total charge on a conductor. The results are illustrated by calculations when the conductor is a sphere.
