SIMULA as a tool for extensible program products
Jacob Palme · ACM SIGPLAN Notices · 1974
The goal of this paper is to show that the SIMULA programmin g language or concepts in that language can be valuable for th e production of secure, extensible, flexible, transportable an d efficient software products .What is Simula ?SIMULA is an advanced programming language comparable in powe r to PL/I or Algol 68 .SINIULA is an extension of Aipe ;el 60 an d contains almost the whole of Algol 60 as a subset .In additio n to this, the language contains features for list structure=s , text processing, direct access i/o, formatted i/o, quas i parallel processes (cnr_outines) and discrete event simu7 .eion , STVUI A , be d i o' a large number 7 small_ an .an. n programs .Moot applications are from Sca ndina : th e langv ;_l, used in many other places i Eur o p e and a p l a c e s i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s a n d e v e n i n Austral a .SILITJLA ha s mostly been used for simulation programs, but the language i s equally well suited for most other programming tasks .Here are some examples of successful SIIUULA programs :-A very large and complex simulation of telephone traffi c systems .-A program for presenting mathematical formulas in conventiona l twodimensional form on a graphic p lotter .-A detailed simulation of an on-line bank terminal compute r system, which was made by a computer manufacturer and becam e a very valuable factor when the customer made his choice o f computer system .-A GPSS system written in SIMULA .-A program for the simulation and design of electrical circuits .
