A new microprocessor architecture for reduced software costs

W. B. Leonard, D. ROTH · 1979

As lower cost, more general purpose hardware is used in computer oriented aerospace systems, functional system behavior (which is application dependent) is becoming more dependent on software. The problems of long length and lack of understandability of most programs are two of the main factors contributing to high s oftware development costs. This paper reports a processor architecture and multi-operand instruction set which greatly reduces these problems. The processor has been implemented using commercial LSI technology, and results show a significant reduction of instruction count in most programs. In addition, program readability is improved, and software modularity is aided.
