Automated correction of film unsteadiness, dirt and grain

Peter Brightwell · 1994

Methods of concealing film dirt and grain, and of reducing unsteadiness, are discussed. Some initial work has been done in these areas, and more will be carried out in the near future. Modern motion estimation and compensation techniques receive particular attention. An integrated system, possibly using a form of hierarchical motion estimation is investigated, as is the provision of motion portrayal improvements. Signal preconditioning is of importance in respect to future digital coding systems, so that bits are not wasted in coding unnecessary artefacts.
