Efficient navigation around complex virtual environments

Anthony J. Steed · 1997

Current virtual environment (VE) systems employ a number of techniques for navigation such & walking on a plane, or flying through space. When exploring complex environments such as building interiors, the navigable spaces might include bridges, steps and slopes, and in some applications it is desirable to keep the participant at a realistic height above the ground. The techniques described in this paper can track the surface point which the participant is above for a tiny computational cost.
