Viewing composition tables as axiomatic systems

Axiomatic systems and composition tables are often seen as alternative ways of specifying the semantic interrelations of relations for qualitative reasoning. Axiomatic characterizations usually specify ontological assumptions concerning the domain of the relations and introduce a taxonomic system of relations that, on the one hand, serves to specify the relations and, on the other hand, supports the communication of the intended meaning.In this article, composition tables are seen as a specific form of axiomatic theories that can also be combined with a taxonomic system of relations. On this basis, the content of composition tables can be reformulated in a simplified way. This simplification supports the construction of such tables parallel to the development of the axiomatic specification or on the basis of a given axiomatic characterization.
