This essentially means thatthe software is free for anyone to download, install, modifyand distribute. Although OSS has its roots in a volunteercommunity, the interest of commercial vendors has increasedconsiderably in recent years. Many organizations have alreadyadopted OSS. One of the main appeals of OSS is that it isavailable free of charge. On the other hand, research on theadoption of OSS has shown that there are a number of issuesthat organizations may experience when migrating to OSS.Some authors have developed evaluation frameworks that arespecifically targeted toward OSS.
