Adaptive array tracking detection

C. S. Liu, Loren W. Nolte · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1975

Adaptive arrays for signals with uncertain spatial information have been proposed in the literature which weigh the outputs of a multibeamformer. A difficulty in designing the adaptive array is obtaining the optimal weighting function for detection and/or estimation. An optimal approach to deriving the weighting function sequentially is shown in this paper for a moving signal source example in which the motion of the signal source is modelled as a Markov stochastic process. The close relationship between the optimal weighting function, the a posteriori probability of the target position and the Markovian statistics of the motion are presented. A computer simulation illustrates the inherent sequential adaptive tracking property of the Bayes optimal array processor. [Supported by Office of Naval Research, Code 222.]
