Further Periodic Solutions of the van der Pol Equation and Its Application to Waveform Generation

William F. Fincham, Chrysostomos L. Nikias · IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics · 1982

The paper commences with a short review of past work in assessing characteristics of the limit cycle condition of the van der Pol oscillator. The virtues of using a “standard” digital simulation language as the computational medium for the study of its periodic and transient behaviour are demonstrated and used to generate solutions for values of the equation parameter which have not been previously published. Conclusions are drawn on the relative influences of these parameters on the limit cycle, specifically its period and amplitude. An example is given to illustrate the use of the data and the versatility of the equation for the generation of repetitive waveforms of specified shape by switching the values of the equation parameters at predetermined time instants.
