Health education in developing countries—the need for an appropriate technology

John Hubley · Health Education Research · 1988

This paper identifies a number of special characteristics which separate developing countries from western industrialized countries and assesses their implication for health education practice. A number of areas are identified where western-derived health education theories and concepts may not be appropriate. These include: the health education roles of different cadres of field workers; the social science theories underlying health education; selection of communication media and methodology for health education research. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need to develop an appropriate methodology of health education based on constructs developed from research within developing countries.
