Communication in the automation field today is characterized by the use of a variety of bus systems with differing bus physics and protocols. For the manufacturers of industrial robots this variety of industrial communication systems leads to extremely high costs for developement and training on the one hand and on the other decreases interoperability of the individual components. Through the gradual increase of Ethernet technology in the automation field industrial communication could be standardized considerably. IDA - INTERFACE FOR DISTRIBUTED AUTOMATION - presents such an effort. IDA standardizes the industrial communication using Ethernet technology exclusively and hereby is able to deal with all the requirements of future automation networks.
