An Artificial Intelligence Approach to Sound Design

Modem computer technology enables the production of a virtually limitless variety of sounds by providing substantial access to the parameter settings of synthesis algorithms. However, this process of producing sounds using synthesis algorithms is still accomplished in a very old-fashioned way-by entering streams of numerical values for each desired sound. Furthermore, these numerical values are usually worked out manually. The composer's imagination easily becomes vulnerable to time-consuming, non-musical tasks. The computer's power could-and should-be directed toward providing composers with better methods for expressing their requests to synthesis algorithms, and therefore assisting in exploring sonic ideas.
