Effect of reverberation on the identification of stationary vowels
Reinier Plomp, Gerrit Cornelis Langhout · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1985
In a diffuse sound field, the amplitudes of the individual harmonics of a stationary vowel have an uncertainty with a standard deviation of 5.57 dB. It is shown that this phenomenon slightly reduces the identification score for a set of eight synthetic vowels derived from male utterances. In terms of variance in the one-third octave band-filter levels, the spectral differences introduced by reverberation are of about the same magnitude as the differences among the spectra of the same vowels pronounced by different male speakers.
