Concurrent programming in Orient84/K
Mario Tokoro, Yutaka Ishikawa · ACM SIGPLAN Notices · 1986
Orient84/K is a concurrent programming language/system which is designed to be used in describing knowledge systems and systems of more general applications. The basic construct of Orient8UK is designed based on and extended from Smalltalk-80.It has the mctaclass-classinstance hierarchy and multiple inheritance from multiple super classes.Constructs and functions for concurrent programming are incorporated, such as asynchronous message passing, synchronization, priority control, access control, and mutual exclusion. In addition, each object is extended in order to store its local knowledge in terms of Horn clauses for knowledge-based programming.Predefined methods for unification are provided for inferring from an object's local knowledge. The demon function is also provided for knowledge-based programming and for exception handling. In this paper, the design philosophy, the concurrent constructs, the model for concurrent programming, and an example for mutual exclusion and access control, are described.
