Developing a managed system in the OSI network management

Young-Chul Shim · 1996

This paper concerns developing a managed system in an OSI network management. We suggest an overall architecture of a managed system. We analyze the weaknesses of the GDMO(Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects) in developing a managed system and propose three extensions to the GDMO to overcome these weaknesses. We also describe the development procedure and support tools for developing a managed system. ~TRODUCTIONThe OSI network management standards give the basic framework and the guidelines for developing a management system for networks and distributed systems [I,2].The management system provides the mechanism to monitor and control resources in networks and distributed systems [3]. Figure 1 shows the general model for a management environment. The manager sends requests to the managed system and receives replies and event reports from the managed system. The manager and the managed system communicates via the standardized communication protocol CMIP[4] and through a set of services defined by CMISE[51.The managed system and a real resource such as 5ESS switches exchange requests, replies, and event reports using a proprietary protocol.
