Operating systems for server environments are seen as mature entities of Information Technology. The most visible Software Architecture enhancements are done on the middleware or even the application layers. Nevertheless operating systems lay out the architectural base for the higher software levels. Especially an operating system like z/OS for IBM mainframe servers highly interacts with middleware for assuring advanced quality of service attributes.
