Abstract Humans perceive a wide range of space by moving their eyes quickly with an essentially narrow view field, but there is no feeling that the viewpoint is moved quickly. This phenomenon is interpreted as follows. Even though the image of the gaze point moves greatly, the image stored in short‐term memory does not change much. Consequently, this paper proposes a model in which the gaze point can be moved over a wide range by moving the gaze point based on a 3D image stored in short‐term memory. A method is also proposed which generates a 3D image that looks like a human view, using both eyes. Based on the features of the 3D image in short‐term memory, movement of the gaze point over a wide range is actually realized. Movement of the gaze point by both eyes based on the 3D image in short‐term memory is simulated in a virtual world constructed by CG. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
