Determination of the Shape of a Lossy Vocal Tract

M. M. Sondhi, B. Gopinath · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1971

It is known that the area function of a lossless vocal tract can be determined from the input impedance at the lips. It is also known that no input measurement can provide information about the losses. However, the possibility exists of obtaining improved area estimates if the losses are known a priori. This last possibility is discussed in this paper, including some examples of loss distribution for which the exact area can be reconstructed from input measurements.
