Moving BITnet users from one operating system to another: problems & solutions
Ben Hawkins · 1990
In 1984 the University of Cincinnati joined BITnet with the addition of a leased telephone line from a machine running MVS to the Ohio State University in Columbus. In 1985, when a machine running VM/CMS became the primary BITnet link, there was not a big conversion problem because few people were using MVS for BITnet access. In early 1989, when the decision was made to phase out VM/CMS service, many faculty and staff members had gotten used to the mailers available under VM/CMS and were unenthusiastic (to say the least) about leaving the environment in which they were comfortable. The installation of JNET software on a VAX 6240 gave users an alternate way to access the network, but still they balked at having to learn a new operating system and mailer.
