We propose a method to restore images degraded by additive noise by threshold decomposition filtering. The background regions in many natural images can be interpreted as concentrations of pixels having amplitudes close to certain constant values. These concentrations of pixels are observed as the peaks in a histogram. In this paper, we present a numerical algorithm to determine whether a two-channel filter bank for threshold decomposition is effectively applied to images having one histogram peak, in particular. We also explain how to determine specific thresholds for applicable images. Thus, the application of threshold decomposition is clearly indicated for images having at least one peak in its histogram. Then by applying the results of this study, we demonstrate through specific examples the precise application of threshold decomposition on images having different histogram characteristics. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 3, 83(10): 17–26, 2000
