Managing Items in an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS)

This article describes the process for selecting, preparing, loading, retrieving, and maintaining items in the William F. Ekstrom Library's automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) at the University of Louisville. The authors discuss what items were initially loaded into the Robotic Retrieval System (RRS), the preparation and software support necessary to make the items findable in the OPAC, required maintenance of the system, and advantages and disadvantages of using an automated storage and retrieval system to store collections.
