The implementation of an exploratory scientific visualization system

The University of Lowell's Computer Graphics Lab has implemented a unique scientific visualization system that makes use of the intuitive human perception of texture as a means of visualizing large databases. Data fields in the database are mapped to the attributes of stick figure icons and the icons are displayed. The result is an N-dimensional representation of the database as a surface of icons. Texture in the icon surface occurs when the geometry of icons under data control produce a perceptible pattern. These textures may show relationships among the data that researchers might overlook with the traditional methods of large database analysis. This abstract describes the overall design of this implementation.
