Selection of a local area network for the Cronus distributed operating system
Kenneth T. Pogran · ACM SIGCOMM Computer Communication Review · 1983
The Cronus Distributed Operating System, under development at Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc., employs high-bandwidth local area network technology to interconnect processing elements that are members of a Cronus "cluster." One requirement imposed upon the Cronus development was that the system employ "commercial, off-the-shelf" local area network technology. This paper describes the requirements we established for the Cronus local area network and the selection process we employed, and gives our reasons for choosing ETHERNET technology.
