Analytic Fault Tolerant Navigation System for High Lift Re-entry Vehicles

Francesco Nebula, Roberto Antonello Palumbo, Federico Corraro · 2010

In this paper an advanced Fault Tolerant Navigation System is proposed, starting from the lessons learned from the first Dropped Transonic Flight Test mission carried out by the Italian Aerospace Research Center. During the first flight, some measurement errors due to failures and operative limitations of the on board hardware instrumentations, have been experienced. In order to solve such problems for the future flight tests and, finally, to improve the vehicle survival to failures, a more robust navigation system integrating an advanced Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery function has been designed. Specifically, system reconfiguration with analytic redundancy has been developed which allows obtaining almost single failure tolerance behavior of the navigation system with limited use of hardware redundancy.
