Comments on “Technique for Correcting Helium Speech Distortion” [W. R. Stover, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 41, 70–74 (1967)]

Roger M. Golden · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1967

The time-adjustment technique for correcting the peculiar sound of helium speech [W. R. Stover, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 41, 70–74 (1967)] critically depends on the accurate determination of fundamental pitch period. Stover does not indicate that “… sensing the pitch rate of the speaker's voice …” is a crucial requirement of his system. However, it appears to this writer that reliable pitch detection plus the implied need for a voiced-unvoiced decision are the most difficult features to implement in his system.
