Plenary speaker: Connectivity driven systems: On-chip, off-chip and in-between

Robert E. Geer · 2012

Summary form only given. There are two main technological challenges that threaten to halt the historical rate of progress of semiconductor technology and devices: (1) The dominant energy consumption of data movement over data computation; and (2) The end of transistor voltage scaling. Energy efficiency and power consumption are at the core of both challenges. Neither challenge can be resolved via technological advances alone. Revolutionary architectural paradigms that drive - and exploit - groundbreaking technology advances in data processing and communication areessential. These revolve around 3D and SOC technologies as the industry moves beyond monolithic (CMOS+Cu) systems. An overview of the technological evolution that has led the industry to this point will be presented and key innovation pathways in energy-efficient devices (including post-CMOS), networks, and systems to overcome critical architectural and technological obstacles will be discussed.
