A program for key determination

Steven R. Holtzman · Interface · 1977

We describe a program which determines the key of a given set of notes (presented without specification of octave, duration, etc.). The program has a rational, directed approach to the problem, using general musical features (e.g. of structure and style) for direction, selecting the features which will be useful in a particular context. The approach is compared to other work — in particular to that of M. Steed‐man and H. C. Longuet‐Higgins.
