Installing a CD-ROM Local Area Network in a Science and Engineering Library

Moid Ahmad Siddiqui · Science & Technology Libraries · 1997

CD-ROM databases on stand-alone workstations have proved neither practical nor cost effective. As the number of CD-ROM databases in libraries increased, libraries were installing Local Area Networks (LANs) to provide a more reliable and convenient simultaneous multiple access to CD-ROM databases. The article reviews the literature on LAN installation and then describes the installation of a CD-ROM LAN using Novell Netware and SCSI Express at a science and engineering academic library in the Arabian Gulf. Server evaluation and installation, access menu, training of users, LAN licensing, campus-wide networking, the impact of networking, and future projects planned are discussed.
