The standards factor

Jonathan T. Grudin · ACM SIGCHI Bulletin · 1988

As described in past columns, several national and international standards development groups are undertaking new work items in the user interface area. This report describes the work of one such group, X3V1.9, and its relationship to standards activity in ANSI, ISO, the Human Factors Society Human-Computer Interaction Standards Committee, and other groups. If ACM SIGCHI or its members wish to become more involved in standards activity, X3V1.9 might be a logical focus, both strategically and tactically, for such an effort. This report is intended to provide background information for deciding whether we should be more involved; it concludes with some alternatives for what form such involvement might take.
