Using New Wireless Technologies to Aid in Negotiation Tasks

Hostage negotiation teams have been putting wireless technologies, in the form of mobile radios and cell phones, to good use for many years. Wireless communications help team members keep in touch, coordinate activities and share information with each other, SWAT members, and other officers. As Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) became commonplace in squad cars, their utility in a negotiation situation also became apparent; team members could bypass the public airwaves to access records back at the station, run criminal history checks and send messages to officers in the field.
