A Comparison of Traditional and Transformational Analyses of Certain Types of Complex Sentence

Elizabeth Bowman · Journal of English Linguistics · 1969

0. This paper compares the analysis of certain types of English sentences by a traditional grammarian, on the one hand, and a team of transformational grammarians, on the other. The traditional grammarian is Donald W. Emery, author of Sentence Analysis (New York, 1961) (SA), which presents analyses illustrated by diagrams of the Reed and Kellogg type. The transformational grammarians are Roderick A. Jacobs and Peter S. Rosenbaum, authors of English Transformational Grammar (Waltham, Mass., 1968) (ETG). Reference will also be made to Rosenbaum’s The Grammar of English Predicate Complement Constructions (M. 1. T. Press, 1967) (GEPCC).
