Evaluation of ZrC HED Overcoated Non-Fuel Elements Summary of Data -ZrC (HEM) Overcoating Data Summary -Evaluation of ZrC HEM Overcoated Non-Fuel Elements Summary of Data From "X"-Coat Run No. AA-186 Corrosion Test Data For Elements With A G-97 GEM NbC Base Coat Corrosion Test Data For Elements With A G-98 GEM NbC Base Coat 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 V •» 13 k^ • • *-/^J^ Astronuclear vcx Laboratory WANL-TME-1865 ABSTRACT (CRD) The purpose of Test Specification 10^ was to develop processes for depositing zirconium carbide on the hot end of NbC-coated fuel elements, to assess the effects of the overcoating process on the base coat, and to evaluate the performance of the overcoating in cyclic corrosion tests.Processes for both HED and HEM overcoating were developed, but only HEM-overcoated elements were corrosion tested.Neither of the overcoating processes degraded the basic NbC GEM coating.The corrosion tested elements showed that there was a significant general improvement in the corrosion test performance as a result of the overcoating.Development work on a ZrC overcoating process is continuing at WNCO as a part of Test Specification 3012.
