Proximity Requirements for Auditory Asynchrony Detection

Irwin W. Pollack · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1969

Gap-interval detection was studied as a function of the relation of the interpulse intervals immediately surrounding the gap region (the “nearfield” region) and of the intervals flanking the surround region (the “farfield” region). The gap threshold is crucially dependent upon the nearfield and is relatively independent of the farfield. Proximity effects are substantially reduced for longer interpulse intervals. The results suggest that the gap threshold is related to the requirements for a local spectral analysis of the gap region. [Research supported by a grant from the National Sciences Foundation.]
