Eigenvalues in Quantum Mechanics: A Computer-Generated Film
Craig R. Davis, Harry M. Schey · American Journal of Physics · 1972
A computer-generated film illustrating eigenvalues in quantum mechanics is described. Dealing with the reduced radial wave equation in the s-wave case and a short-range central potential which supports three bound states, the film illustrates the behavior of solutions of the equation as the energy is allowed to vary continuously. The conditions which must be satisfied by physically acceptable solutions are presented and the film shows that such solutions arise only for certain discrete values of the energy. Stills from the film are presented and discussed, and details of the numerical methods involved in solving the wave equation are given.
