Bandelet is a new image representation method, which can efficiently indicate the local directions and is adapted to the image geometry. The set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm is an efficient method for lossy and lossless, which is a kind of famous embedded wavelet image coding algorithm in image compression. In this paper, bandelet transform and SPIHT are introduced and the structure of bandelet coefficients is analyzed, which is the same structure with wavelet coefficients. Then a bandelet-based image coding algorithm with SPIHT is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate that a better compression performance can be achieved using the proposed coding algorithm, in comparison with the traditional SPIHT of wavelet transform - embedded image coding algorithm. Additionally, more detail information, i.e. textures and edges, in the coded images are preserved in the proposed coding algorithm.
