Information Theory and Cybernetics
August W. Smith · Journal of Cybernetics · 1974
The fields of information theory and of cybernetics are of relatively recent innovation, having both been formulated and developed since World War II as a result of advancements in the communications field. A substantial amount of material has been published to date on subjects as distinct fields of study, but a review of several sources brings a rapid realization that there are many significant differences in views concerning these fields among various authors and researchers. In addition, a large part of the material published in this area is written for the reader assumed to have had some scientific or mathematical background. These factors combine to make it difficult for the layman to quickly come to terms with definitions and to obtain a working knowledge of the subjects. This paper is meant to be introductory in scope and hopefully will case, if not eliminate, some of these difficulties. References for more in-depth study are included in the bibliography for those who desire a more detailed understanding.
