Development life-cycle WITH reuse

This article presents preliminary results on development methods carried out in the REBOOT 1 (REuse Based on Object-Oriented Techniques) ESPRIT project. It describes an adaptation of the classical object-oriented development process to development with reuse. We focus on the WITH reuse development aspects corresponding to the development of software from existing building blocks or reusable components. ContextThe current state of the practice in reuse is informal reuse either based on individual basis (reuse of its own components) or on commercial products (data base systems, user interface systems). The development life cycle WITH reuse has been set-up in the REBOOT project as a necessary support to formalize and enhance the reuse practice, it is based on an overall study of the development of reusable components and of their exploitation, and on a set of experiments with industrial parmers. There are two distinct aspects in the overall reuse development process:1. Development FOR reuse: The development of new inherently reusable components.2. Development WITH reuse: The development of systems using existing reusable components. These development activities are considerably different: the development FOR reuse deals with making reusable components that match a set of reusability and quality constraints. The emphasis for developing reusable components is put on the quality criteria to the detriment of the production costs of the component. The development WITH reuse activities deal with the whole development process, from the identification of, and search for the reusable com-1.The aim of the REBOOT project is to develop methods and tools for the creation, adaptation and reuse of components, and to transfer these results into the production divisions and the European market of software development.iPermission to copy without fee all
