COMPUTERS AND CHAOS: AN EXAMPLE

María Inés Troparevsky · International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos · 1992

In this work, an example of the difficulties that may arise when exploring dynamical systems with a digital computer, is presented. It is the case of a linear piecewise function with a period −3 orbit. Computational simulations move us to believe that this orbit is an attracting one, but a theoretical analysis demonstrates that what the computer shows is not, in this case, the real behavior of the system.
