Optical gain of a phototransistor with its base not isolated

The optical gain of a bipolar phototransistor operating with its base not isolated is studied by the use of an Ebers and Moll circuit model. It is found that the optical gain is not necessarily reduced, but can be increased if an appropriate bias voltage is applied to the base of the phototransistor. Experimental measurement results agree with the theoretical results.
