The MATE project ('[!ematics L14-8370) aims to facilitate the re-use of spoken dialogue resources and to foster empirical investigation of dialogue by pro- riding a workbench which can be used to annotate and explore the relationships among diflirent. structures within a lialogue corpas. This paper describes the intended functionality of the workbench by ref- erence to the needs of several types of prospectiw users. !t should be considered a position paper about what kind of technological support the user commu- nity requires. The workbem:h itself is :heduled to be released in I)ecember 1999, with further development likely beyond that.
