Studies on a Computer-Programmed Formant Vocoder

Cecil H. Coker · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1964

A computer-programmed formant vocoder is being used as a “breadboard” for testing possible vocoder features. Recent studies include an informal evaluation of a controllable pole-zero pair for approximation of the glottal-source spectrum and nasalization in a serial resonance synthesizer. Currently, forms of nonlinear smoothing of formant signals are being tried. These studies are discussed and demonstration tapes are played.
