Optimizing learning by interactive presentation in multi‐trial free recall

Daniel Gaonac’h · British Journal of Psychology · 1984

This paper presents an experiment concerned with the subjective organization of lists of words in free recall learning. In one condition (interactive presentation), the presentation order of words is determined according to the subjective organization on the previous trials. This type of presentation leads to better learning when compared to a control situation in which words are presented on each trial in random order. Moreover, the results obtained here and in other experiments suggest that the consequences of interactive presentation are not the same for all subjects. It seems possible that this type of presentation constitutes a compensation for difficult learning conditions and for ineffective individual strategies.
